Ice cream!

We have been very busy inquiry time. We have made ice cream. These are the steps that we used.

We put in half a cup of milk. In the milk we put sugar and vanilla essence. This means ice cream would be vanilla flavour.

We locked the bag shut, making sure there wasn't much air. Then put it in another glad bag. This was to stop an explosion.

Next we filled a bigger bag with ice.

We then put salt into the bag with ice. In the icebag we put in the milk bag. The salt makes the ice colder. We then had to shake the ice bag! It was cold.

This as the end result!

Making yoghurt!!

First we put some cold water in the container.

Then we put the powder in.

We shook the container and this mixed the powder with the water. The container will sit on this white shelf.

We filled the white container with hot water. Then we put the white shelf into the container.
On this shelf we put in the container with the mixture.

The next day we took them out.

It wasn't liquid any more!

We all got to try some. Sophia thought it tasted the same as other yoghurt. Libby thought the strawbery one was chunky and the banana one was smooth.

We are now wondering what is in the powder that makes it set in the container with hot water?

Hockey with Greer!

Last week we had hockey with Greer. She showed us how to fold the stick and push the ball to our partner.

Pushing the ball to our partners.

Dribbling around the cones.

Playing a game! We had to be careful not to bring our sticks too high!

Our acorns!

One of our acorns has grown the shoot for the new tree!

That didn't take very long! How long do you think it will take for the rest to grow?

Not much has happened to our acorns in the jar yet.

Our shape castles!

Check out our shape castles we made.

On our castles you should see triangles, cylinders, rectangles, rectangular prisms and maybe a diamond.
We had to draw a plan of our castle and write what shapes we were going to use.
The hardest thing was cutting out the hard plastic and hard cardboard. We also had trouble making sure we cut them correctly like the shape it is meant to be. To help this we found the shapes in the Kool Kids class and went around the outside and then we cut this out.

Our Matariki kites

To celebrate this years Matariki week we have made kites like the 7 sisters in the Matariki book.
We decorated a piece of paper. Next we folded the paper in half and measured 5cm on the folded line. Then we measured another 5cm. The first mark is where we folded the corners to and we stapled them on that mark.  Next we used the next the 5 cm line and put a hole punch in. This is where we tied the string.
We used this website to make the kites. Paper kites
Check out our photos below.

When we made them it was hard folding the paper and tying the string.

Here you can see Tima and her kite!

Miss McCulloch had a bought kite, we saw that hers was went really high and moved with the wind. Rahui wanted to add some tails to his kite because he thought it would make it fly better.

Oliver went and got a plastic bag. We tied two bits of string on and it flew really well. It caught the wind in the bag.

Acorns

One lunch time Tallulah, Sophia and Kooper collected acorns. We put them in this container with straw ... Hoping they would grow!

They did grow! You can see this is the root of the new plant. An acorn grows into a oak tree.

Can you see the new root growing?

We have now planted our own acorns to hopefully grow a oak tree! This will take a long time.

Can you see the new root and the new tree stalk growing?

This is a picture we found on google that shows the same thing.

Matariki

This week is Matariki. They are seven stars in the sky. There are lots of different stories about Matariki. We read one about the seven kites and another book that told us a little bit about each of the other stories. There is one about the seven chiefs and about Tane smashing a bright star. Each story is different and different people believe different things.
We learnt that people celebrate Matariki in lots of different ways. People might share stories, have a party, make food together.

In class we made an porotiti. It is an instrument that the sounds like the wind.  Tip- if you blow on it... then it will sound even better!

If you want to find Matariki. You need to look in the morning where the sun comes up for the seven stars.
